PIM system is a master system used to manage product information within a single database. Allows unloading, editing, synchronizing data from CRM, CMS, ERP and other systems and uploading information to these systems and sales channels.

We use Akeneo PIM and Pimcore systems

Any data can be structured, enriched and imported or exported via standardized APIs, for example, blogs and articles for Content-as-a-Service. Since Pimcore is also an MDM, it facilitates control over a wide range of data assets (text, media, static attributes) as well as customer, product, and vendor information. Pimcore is fully equipped to support multiple levels of product hierarchies. Product variant specification is also unrestricted in Pimcore and can have multiple differentiators. Besides that, data modelling configuration can be easily carried out via the Web GUI.
Products can be managed with Akeneo using an Entity–Attribute–Value model. Single level hierarchies are supported for product families in Akeneo instead of multi-level hierarchies. Only a maximum of 2 product differentiators can be selected to create a single product variant. Akeneo does not offer any access for data model configuration in its Web GUI.

Apart from Product Information Management (PIM) Pimcore integrates Web Content Management (WCM). It can work seamlessly with product as well as master data. It also comes with a built-in Digital Asset Management (DAM), and Integrated Commerce, which allows for easier content commerce in your online shop.
Akeneo only offers a PIM solution for enterprises that want to manage their product information.
Pimcore offers a personalization feature in CMS that can automatically personalize portions of content based on user behaviour. Pimcore increases engagement through personalized digital experiences based on behavioural targeting, user profiling and data collection via web analytics and business intelligence.
Since Akeneo is only restricted to product information management, it does not make any promises on personalization for customer's users. It does, however, recommend e-retailers to personalize the experience of their customers with some external tools like recommendation engines (Avail, RichRelevance, Prediggo, etc.) or searchandizing tools (Endeca, Fredhopper, etc.)
Pimcore comes with a "connect anything" architecture. It is capable of integrating any amount, and any type of digital data for enterprises of any size and any industry. Its API driven approach enables incredible connectivity with enterprise systems CRMs, ERPs, ESBs, BIs, or 3rd party applications. Pimcore is integration ready in every situation. When it comes to importing and exporting, file format is never a restriction for Pimcore. Integration endpoint support is present for all kinds of connections.
Akeneo offers an ecosystem of integrators. These are custom connectors for any product information source. It claims that their solution partners can help with business and taxonomic issues to provide seamless integrations between Akeneo and enterprise existing systems. In Akeneo, import and export only supports Excel and CSV file formats. Integration endpoint support does not exist to configure any connections to Java Message Queues, Hotfolders, etc.
Ease of Integration
Pimcore is highly scalable, enterprise-ready web application, apt for highly agile global environments, including huge amounts of data, digital assets and products, hundreds of editors and millions of monthly visitors. Therefore, the scalability offered by Pimcore is boundless. Being open source, data modelling and data ingestion gets full-scale flexibility in Pimcore.
With Akeneo PIM 2.0, released in September 2017, they have upped the ante in scalability, facilitating the managing of complex catalogues with ease. As an open source solution, the ability to develop additional components is there in Akeneo, but a certain level of out of the box support is missing for their data modelling and ingestion requirements.
