What should an office in an IT company be like?

The trend of competing over whose office is cooler was born in

Silicon Valley

Apple, Microsoft, and Google started in garages, but look at the impressive offices they have now. Apple Campus in Cupertino, California

Svetlana, HR specialist: 'The office is part of the image.'

Its main task is to attract and retain the best employees

IT still faces a talent shortage and, you could say, an arms race: companies compete for top talent by offering salaries and conditions better than their neighbors.

But surveys show that the office environment matters to programmers just as much as pay.

Take a look at the results of the My Circle survey on what matters in job postings for IT specialists.

Inspiring and creative

  1. Why? Programmers are talented, creative people. And this is not only about the creators of entirely new software that no one had imagined before them.

  2. Programmers do not use phrases like “beautiful code” and “elegant architecture” for nothing.

  3. What happens to employees when the office environment inspires them: improvement ideas come up more often; both creative tasks and routine work become easier to complete; an active mindset develops; there is a sense of belonging to something interesting and valuable; going to work becomes more pleasant; loyalty to the employer increases.

  4. In addition, IT has the most innovators, people who are open to new technologies. It is only natural that developers' offices are where the newest things are tested and introduced, because it is so interesting. For example, energy management and biometric access control, smart home systems, and new design and architectural solutions.

An example from global practice

At Airbnb, offices are designed as apartments that can be rented through the service.

The result is unusual, warm, and distinctive.

The work area in Google’s Airbnb office encourages creativity in any form, even unusual ones.

Do employees feel inspired to water cucumbers or keep bees?

To do this, a garden club and beehive will be created.

The garden club at Google. Apple installed huge solar panels and is introducing energy-saving technologies.

It looks futuristic and unusual, and it also helps protect the environment!

We have to admit that Steve Jobs inspires us

Training room at kt.team. We also support modern technical solutions everywhere, even in the details. kt.team has no keys: entry is by fingerprint only.

Visitors to our Tolyatti office are often surprised by its size: it is a 1,300-square-meter open space.

Everyone can find a cozy spot here.

You can move freely between zones and work in a group or remotely, at a desk or sitting in a beanbag. Space and freedom!

The hangar-style office reminds us of Valve's office, the creators of the famous game Half-Life.

We watch movies here, run workshops for employees, and host meetups for up to a hundred people.

Fresh flowers, walls with artificial grass, and bright accent chairs pair well with the calm white walls.

We often play foosball, board games, and ping-pong to relax at lunch or chat with guests in an informal setting after large events such as meetups, conferences, and training sessions.

We also put together a library, and kt.team orders all the books needed for work.

Why?

  1. In IT, it is common to encourage employees to exercise more often.

  2. A sedentary lifestyle and constant computer work are very harmful to health. And a healthy lifestyle as a sign of a mindful person is now in demand.

  3. Leading IT companies support and develop this.

  4. In addition: exercise improves cognitive abilities, because the brain works better; preventing illness is easier than treating it; people become happier because exercise releases feel-good hormones; and it is fashionable and creates a good company image.

An example from global practice

The larger the company, the more extensive its fitness culture tends to be. A pool in the courtyard of Google's office. But sometimes it is not possible to set up either a pool or even a gym in the office (simply because there is no space, and moving to a new office is inconvenient). In that case, the company reimburses employees for their personal sports expenses or pays for corporate classes at a nearby sports center.

We support a healthy lifestyle. We have a gym with exercise machines. Group training sessions with a trainer take place twice a week, and there is a shower to freshen up afterward. The fridge always has fruit and vegetables, nuts, dried fruit, healthy bars, and smoothies. For breakfast, there is carefully prepared porridge, scrambled eggs, and toast.

Why?

  1. An office should be warm and bright, with a comfortable desk and chair, and a place to have lunch and coffee.

  2. These are basic needs of any person, not just an IT specialist.

  3. Offices are adapting to Agile principles.

  4. This flexible project management system is especially popular in IT.

  5. Under Agile, the whole team should work close together and communicate closely, and open spaces make this easiest to organize. To let people rest from communication, offices also create special zones for introverts.

  6. Companies care not only about how their employees spend working hours, but also about how well they can rest after work to recover their energy. IT giants build city-sized campuses with their own infrastructure.

  7. All household issues can be solved during the lunch break!

  8. Instead of spending hours after work on laundry, a haircut, or a doctor visit.

  9. Many programmers spend more than the standard 40 hours a week at work, by choice.

  10. Productivity sometimes needs rituals: reading a book, playing an RPG, or listening to a podcast.

  11. To understand how the brain works at this time, we recommend reading an interesting article: "Do Not Wake the Programmer."

  12. We do not live in the office, but it can become a second home if needed.

An example from global practice

Everyone's comfort standard is different

For example, Gazprom's office in Saint Petersburg has sleep pods so employees can take a nap during the day. They say it boosts productivity.

For the regions, this is still unusual, but who knows what will happen in a couple of years :) As for open spaces, people are already used to them.

Teams can change from project to project, and offices of many different sizes are needed, which is not always possible.

That is why open space is the most common type of office in IT.

These height-adjustable tables were designed for Agile teams.

You can work standing behind them

This kind of table is convenient for holding a daily stand-up, a quick discussion of the day's plans, problems, and accomplishments.

During a stand-up, team members stand rather than sit, and the high table can hold a laptop.

An interesting global practice is the hot desking system of flexible workstations.

Example: see the photo below

In this Orange Business Services office, workstations are not assigned to specific employees.

You can change locations every day: wherever there is an empty chair, that is where you work.

Utility rooms should make life easier and save employees time. For example, here is a laundry room in Google's office: no more washing clothes after work.

It's better to rest and spend time with family. In fact, you may not need to buy a washing machine at all: pure savings!

The hot desking idea did not work for us

We follow a different trend: individually configured workstations tailored to specific needs.

Many of our developers are learning English, so they need quieter areas with better sound insulation to speak with their teacher on Skype.

Programmers often want to use two large monitors or a desktop and laptop at the same time.

We take these needs into account and can provide all the required equipment.

Some people prefer a laptop with a detachable keyboard.

We use MacBook, Dell Latitude, 2K, and 4K monitors. In our view, an office should be flexible.

Not only workstations matter, but also open space for business and informal meetings, as well as relaxation.

High sofa backs act as a sound barrier.

You can work here with a laptop when you want to be alone

HR managers conduct interviews, copywriters take interviews: you can talk without disturbing your open-space neighbors. We also have a cozy vape area where you can smoke without bothering others, while relaxing or working.

Recently, we tested the purchase of ergonomic chairs for people with any back issues (osteochondrosis, post-injury complications).

We will collect feedback and see whether we need more chairs like these.

If desired, there is an option to work standing up, though we usually use these tables for stand-up meetings.

We also aim to save people’s time after work, just like large IT corporations.

We have not yet reached the point of building a campus the size of a whole city :) Our office has a washing machine that all employees can use.

It is most often used to wash sportswear by people who work out in the gym. And a long lunch break (1 hour) with a flexible start time (between 12:00 and 16:00) is convenient because it gives you time to handle personal matters: go to the doctor, the hairdresser, or the store.

Future design of kt.team's office in Tolyatti

  1. We really love our current office in Tolyatti, but kt.team is growing fast! The team already has 96 people: developers, designers, marketing and sales staff, HR managers...

  2. A redesign is needed to fit comfortably and welcome guests and new employees. The design project is almost ready, and we are eagerly awaiting the details.

  3. Here is the secret: the office layout will change, there will be more workstations, and there will also be more spaces for privacy.

  4. There will be stylish and comfortable meeting rooms, tables to suit each team’s taste, and interactive mind maps.

  5. The kitchen area will expand, and the gym will not only get bigger but also receive new upgraded equipment: a punching bag, more machines, and more weights.

  6. We will also update the relaxation area, and it will have panoramic windows. After such an upgrade, the question is:

  7. What should a developer choose: freelancing or office work Over the next year, we will share updates with you, so follow kt.team on social media: Instagram: instagram.com/kt_team.ru VKontakte: vk.com/kt.team Facebook: facebook.com/kmplzt And if you work in IT and want to see our offices in Tolyatti in person,
