Pimcore 2026.3: Three Small Changes That Affect PIM Pricing

See what matters for business in Pimcore 2026.3.0: version co-authors, workflow custom_extensions, and configurable thumbnail caching.

  • What is included in the release
  • Why a minor release matters more than a major one
  • Co-authors in versions: who edited the item
  • Workflow: custom data without a fork

What is included in the release

  1. Pimcore released version 2026.3.0 (release on GitHub).

  2. There are no headline features in the changelog.

  3. The developers added co-author data to object versions, provided a workflow slot for custom extensions, and moved the thumbnail cache lifetime into configuration.

  4. If a company has a Pimcore catalog with tens of thousands of products, this list deserves close attention: these changes will affect the cost of maintaining PIM three years from now.

Why a minor release matters more than a major one

PIM (Product Information Management) stores the master product record:

  • attributes
  • descriptions
  • Photo
  • links

Data flows from PIM to the website, marketplaces, and printed catalogs.

PIM is usually implemented in six months, then customized for two years: the core is modified and third-party bundles are copied. As a result, version upgrades become separate projects with their own budgets and risks, and teams postpone them for years. Pimcore has switched to calendar versioning: the year and the release sequence number. In this release, the maintenance branch moved to 2026.2, while files are synchronized with the `pimcore/platform-version` repository.

For businesses, this means releases will arrive frequently and on a predictable schedule.

In our experience, if customization lives in extension points and the core remains untouched, an update takes days.

If the core has been rewritten, an update takes months. In 2026.3, three changes add precisely these extension points.

Co-authors in versions: who edited the item

  1. Pimcore stores each object's history as versions. PR #19235 adds co-author information to each version.

  2. A product card is usually edited by several people.

  3. The integration imports attributes from 1C, the content manager writes the description, the AI generator adds SEO text, and the category manager changes the price and images.

  4. When a marketplace error is found in a product attribute, the first step is to determine where it came from.

  5. If the history records only the last person who saved the product card, the team reconstructs what happened from chat messages.

  6. Our interpretation (not stated in the release notes): version co-authorship makes it possible to distinguish the contributions of a person and a model.

  7. This is needed for quality control in projects where a model generates item records.

  8. When it is clear which fields the agent filled in, validation is configured only for those fields, so the editor does not reread the entire product card.

Workflow: custom data without a fork

  1. A workflow in Pimcore describes an object's lifecycle.

  2. Statuses (draft, enrichment, review, published) are called places, permitted transitions between them are transitions, and actions available in any status are global actions. PR #19237 adds a shared `custom_extensions` slot to all three entities. Statuses almost always need their own data: stage completion time, responsible role, and whether an AI check is mandatory before publication.

  3. Previously, they were stored alongside the workflow in a separate configuration file or bundle, and each update required checking that they still matched the process.

  4. This data now resides in the `custom_extensions` slot directly in the process definition, and Pimcore itself supports this format. Here is an example from our practice.

  5. Before moving to “publication,” the product card is checked through the LLM & Security Gateway: the model compares the description with the attributes and looks for contradictions.

  6. “Check required” flag

  7. is now recorded in the transition itself, so a separate settings table is no longer needed.

Thumbnails and caching: catalog traffic and speed

  1. Pimcore generates thumbnails from source images and delivers them with HTTP caching headers. PR #19255 makes this cache lifetime configurable.

  2. In a large catalog, this small setting makes a noticeable difference.

  3. Product photos change once a year: a long cache lifetime reduces requests to the Pimcore server and speeds delivery through the CDN.

  4. Banners and promotions change weekly: a short cache lifetime ensures that buyers do not see an outdated promotion. Previously, separating these scenarios required rewriting headers at the web server or proxy level.

  5. The release also includes a refactoring of GEE log parsing (Generic Execution Engine—the Pimcore engine for background tasks such as exports and bulk operations).

  6. We expect long-running job logs to become easier to read and incidents to be investigated faster. We will verify this with real exports.

How we solve this in projects

KT.Team implements Pimcore and Akeneo as a product data hub and connects them to 1C, marketplaces, and the website through Datareon, Apache Kafka, or MuleSoft.

Around PIM, we build an AI layer for product description generation, catalog filter facets, and taxonomy normalization.

Three rules save clients the most money: Customization only through extension points: bundles, events, and configuration.

If a task cannot be solved without changing the core, we record it as technical debt and state its cost. An update once per quarter.

We run regression tests in a staging environment with a copy of the real catalog, including heavy exports.

A series of small updates costs less than one major leap every three years. - AI works inside the workflow.

Product description generation and validation are defined as statuses and transitions, each with an owner. A script someone runs manually on Fridays does not belong in this model.

We measure TTU (time to use): the time from the decision “we are launching a new product line”

to product cards on the storefront

TTU is determined by how well the process in PIM is documented and automated. The choice of model and interface has little impact on it.

Conclusion

Release 2026.3.0 will not make the headlines, and that is fine.

It adds three extension points: processes, auditing, and caching can now be configured through the standard configuration without custom code.

My advice to PIM owners: read vendor releases as a list of code you can remove from your own system.

The less custom development you have, the cheaper the next upgrade

And regular, low-cost updates are the most reliable way to avoid getting stuck on a version the vendor will stop supporting in two years.
